Svmuu News: Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Zhipu is evaluating the possibility of designing its own AI chips to address the rapidly growing demand for its GLM series of open-source large language models and the shortage of computing resources caused by U.S. export restrictions. The company has recently held preliminary discussions with several Chinese chip design firms to explore the joint development of a custom AI processor optimized for the operational scenarios of its models.
Zhipu is one of China’s leading AI large-model companies, and its GLM series of models has garnered attention for its open-source strategy and performance. As the scale of large-model applications expands, high-performance computing resources have become a key bottleneck for AI companies’ development; in-house chips are seen as a way to reduce reliance on external GPU supplies and improve computing efficiency. At present, Zhipu AI has not yet made a final decision on whether to proceed with this chip project, and related plans remain in the early evaluation stage. (The Information)
